Introduction to Churches in Leamington and Milverton
For many centuries Leamington's only church was the parish church, All Saints. The advent of the Spa led to a vastly increased demand for church capacity, mainly within the Church of England system. Eventually this demand led to the carving out of more parishes and their attendant churches. The proprietary chapels also helped the satisfy some of the demand, often with a particular religious agenda to satisfy.
Non-Conformity also arrived with the birth of the nineteenth century, and in turn led to the building of many chapels to address the needs of the various Dissenting sects and divisions.
All of these factors led to a large number of churches and chapels being built over the nineteenth to meet the great Victorian demand for religious life.
The list below endevours to include as many the churches and chapels as can be traced. The judgement used for inclusion has generally been based on the building rather than the status of the congregation.
Any further information, especially photographs, on these churches, or any others will be welcomed at Bath Place, History Group.
