Alternative Leamington Spa

During the 1970s and 1980s the area around Bath Street in Leamington became associated with people who upheld socialist beliefs and principles and were seeking alternative lifestyles. Rental prices here were cheaper than properties nearer the Parade and many buildings were converted to student flats and other shared housing. This attracted university graduates and other young people who were drawn to the less commercial aspect represented by The Other Branch bookshop and The Cornmother wholefoods shop.
